Each of our luxury restaurants in Moscow is famous in its own way, and each one has its inimitable image, as well as traditions and habitués of its own.
In these fine restaurants, over the period of one hundred years, Muscovites and Moscow guests ardently "attacked" the fascinating dishes with fork and knife, enjoying themselves, and admiring the fantasies of culinary wizards.
We invite you to the main restaurant of the hotel, Metropol. Metropol is a legendary restaurant in Moscow. The history of the whole century is bound up with it. Noisy banquets, high-life weddings, international conferences, political debates, all these were held in Metropol.
Under the vault of the hall Fyodor I. Shalyapin sang, Vladimir I. Lenin made speeches, Bernard Shaw ordered vegetarian dishes, King of Spain Juan Carlos made receptions, Michael Jackson played softly the piano - it is impossible to enumerate all the guests of note who visited Metropol restaurant. Today Metropol is glad to see the new visitors.
If a thought to taste the genuine Russian cuisine occurred to you, the Metropol restaurant is just for you. Traditional blinis (kind of pancakes) with caviar, far-famed Russian shchi (cabbage soup) and solyankas (meat or fish soup with salted cucumbers and olives), salmon, stellate sturgeon, meat and mushrooms - the recipes of many dishes were handed over from generation of Metropol chefs. The Meropol restaurant is also famous for the menu of European cuisine and carte-des-vins: what a combination!
The monumental hall of Metropol restaurant with a great glass dome, a marble fountain, splendid standard lights, wall painting in the manner of Rubens make a deep impression. At first the decoration was made in the moderne style by architect S. Galenzovsky. In 1910 A. Erixson decided to restructure the restaurant by adding the elements of neoclassicism.
In 1986 the restaurant was closed for restoration as a result of which splendid wall painting was cleared, the pedestal on which the sculpture of the boy is set in the fountain was renewed, the glass dome restored the former magnificence. Every fragment of the dome was cleared, the defective glass panels were replaced by new ones, if need be, every dome part out of 2500 was covered with transparent glass from above.

The gastronomical geography of our Evropeisky restaurant in Moscow stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Volga river. The restaurant menu offers Greek salad, Minestrone soup, Norwegian shrimps. Faint Mediterranean breeze fans from various seafood dishes. For those who appreciate the Italian cuisine there is an ample choice of pasta and spaghetti dishes. A place of honour in the restaurant menu is given to Russian cuisine dishes. Among the restaurant specialities are red caviar with blinis, borsh, Beef Stroganoff.
Stretched along the axis, along which run two rows of columns, the restaurant hall seems endless. This impression is created with transparent vividness by the mirrors installed at each end of the hall. The interior is maintained in the classical style. Obviously the idea to arrange the design in this style has been inspired by the reminiscences of ancient Rome. The double-floor restaurant is similar to a Roman atrium, with a reflecting skylight serving as a substitute for the Italian sunlight sky.
The remarkable paintings on the walls and on the ceiling are also made in the classical genre, depicting antique subjects. These pictures were painted by the artist Ignatius Nivinsky (who later would take part in the designing of the Mausoleum of Lenin in Red Square). The wall facing was managed by the notable master Georgy List (the beginning of the 20th century). He also sculptured the two dogs (of green serpentine) which sit near the restaurant entrance keeping a never-ending guard.
At the beginning of the 20th century this was a coffee-hall, one of the best in Moscow. The coffee-hall occupied the place where trade was brisk. Near it was the central entrance of Metropol. Attracted by the aroma of fresh-made coffee and baking, the guests hastened to look in ... the coffee-hall as soon as they had put up at the hotel. In 1918 came the time for different aromas to pervade the air from inside. It was the odours of makhorka, soldier’s greatcoats, and kersey high-boots that took the place of the former aromas.
The first-class hotel was turned into the Second House of Soviets. In the adjacent big hall of the Metropol restaurant there were held meetings of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee, while the former coffee-house was chosen by the Bolshevik fraction. Its leaders Lenin, Trotsky and Sverdlov frequently met here to fulfill the destiny of the enormous country.
At the end of the 1920s the Soviet and Party establishments left the Metropol hotel, and the hall again became a coffee-hall. After reconstruction of the hotel at the end of the 1980s the hall recovered its original splendour, acquired the status of restaurant, and was given a new name Evropeisky (European).
